Grandmother's Secrets: The Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing.

This is the first book about belly dancing I have ever read.

Al-Rawi, Rosina Fowzia. Grandmother's Secrets: The Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing

I highly recommend it to all of those who are eager to find the soul of this ancient dance. Written by Rosina Fowzia Al-Rawi, an Arab women, philosopher, scientist, and sufi, the book describes the Oriental Dance in its most natural settings: homes, weddings, social gatherings. I was fascinated with the story of a little girl as she was initiated into womanhood. Rosina Fowzia not only gracefully shares her personal history but also connecting the reader with the spirit of age-old rituals and their possibilities for healing and empowering women.

Here is one of my favourite quotes:

“Belly Dancing teaches you an attitude: a new way to open yourself, far beyond blind imitation. It is a source of courage and inspiration that provides an opportunity to discover oneself on a deeper level. It is meant as a way to enjoy and a way to understand, and this all depends upon how it is learned and why.”
